/01 Context
SparkRecipes was a website for finding and sharing healthy recipes. It was primarily used as a companion to the SparkPeople Nutrition Tracker where you could easily find the nutritional information for a recipe and add it to your daily totals.
In 2017, we redesigned the existing Android app to leverage the familiar Material Design used on many Android Apps at the time. By designing it based on the Material Design specs, you were more likely to be featured in the Android Store and it made using the app easier and more familiar to Android users.

Design Structure
Material design is a comprehensive set of rules and guidelines to help shape the UX of any design used primarily with Android devices.
A number of components and elements are very familiar to any Android user and staying within those guidelines helps create a consistent experience for Android users.

Creativity Within Structure
Finding creative ways to add visual interest and stand out from the crowd of recipe apps was a fun challenge. Many apps designed for Android only follow the basic Material design guidelines and add nothing extra which can lead to a very plain design.
Using colorful backgrounds and illustrations to enhance the standard Material Design buttons and user interface.
The Material stepper created an easy and familiar way to create and upload your recipe.

Iconic Android Menus
The "Hamburger" menu navigation has become ubiquitous throughout the mobile landscape and creates an easily accessible menu that takes up little space.
The floating action button creates a great call to action on the recipe. Allowing the user to easily like, track or perform other common functions.
The bottom-bar navigation lets the user easily get to different sections of the recipe for reduced aimless scrolling.
